Singer Cho Yong Pil has returned with ‘20’.
In 2022, singer Cho Yong Pil sequentially showed the journey to the 20th album with ‘Road to 20 – Prelude 1’ and in 2023 with ‘Road to 20 – Prelude 2’, finally unveiling the big picture of the album ‘20’. In the new work ‘20’, Cho Yong Pil showcases his unique intense musical imprint across a wide genre spectrum of rock, electronica, and ballads, presenting ‘Cho Yong Pil ver. 2024’.
The first track and title song ‘It's Okay’ is a heartfelt anthem for everyone in this era. It’s a song that gently encourages you to believe in yourself and that it’s okay to be a little late. The message is warm, yet the music's color is refreshing. A thrilling electric guitar, refreshing vocals, and high-resolution sound come together to complete Cho Yong Pil's modern rock. The concept of this song, explained by lyricist Lim Seo Hyun, is ‘halfway (in the middle, imperfect, quite okay)’. “If you believe in yourself, it’s okay to be a little late or take a slightly wrong path. It’s okay. I wanted to tell everyone, and myself too.”
‘Moment’ is an exciting pop rock with catchy sing-along sections. It’s a city drive song sung by someone who can’t control their feelings while taking someone they just fell in love with home, with hands resting on the steering wheel and heart on the road. The shimmering electric guitar and a drum beat that rushes like a running start are dazzling. ‘Shining you, messy me / It’s a fantastic flow!’
‘Timing’ is a fast-paced electronic pop/rock. A beat that shakes the earth carries a song with rapid off-beat lyrics like rap. It bounces like a clear shower. Has the boy who was once unable to control his heart now become a young man? It’s cute as if it’s shouting its own realization, ‘There’s timing in love!’ ‘There’s timing in life!’ A highly addictive song that shines in baseball stadiums, concert halls, and short forms on mobile phones.
‘Like Serengeti’ is a track that will truly captivate a large concert hall. With a four-on-the-floor rhythm that induces huge applause, an exotic melody reminiscent of Nordic folk songs wraps around it. Instead of a tiring hike up Kilimanjaro, it feels like a camping festival opening in a wide meadow. Ecstasy and joy leap out of the speakers.
The ballad ‘Why’ is a poignant love song like a dream on an autumn night. It’s a dramatic masterpiece. The song begins with dreamy whispers and calm keyboard playing, unfolding precariously between minor and major, and between chest voice and falsetto. The explosive climax in the latter half is also a highlight. An intense guitar solo reminiscent of progressive metal, along with a rushing string section, reaches its peak and suddenly closes the curtain like a ghost.
‘Feeling of You’ brings back the refreshing vibe of a festival. The chorus ‘Now ignite the fire hot / Now feel your dream, for you / The feeling of you’ will excite dreamers of this world like a 2024 version of ‘Let’s Go Travel’. A song for those who escape from complicated daily life and race towards their dreams.
‘La’ is the hardest electronic track. A tight buildup, dense bass, and explosive snare sound collide joyfully with Cho Yong Pil’s robotically processed vocals. Cho Yong Pil's unique husky and intricate voice meets cutting-edge arrangements, exuding an irreplaceable freshness. It lightly jumps over the walls of generations and genres.
The music video for the title track ‘It's Okay’ was produced in collaboration with New Jeans and the hot ‘Dolphin Kidnapping Group’. Director Lee Joo Hyung, who held the megaphone, said, “I wanted to tell those walking through a dark place where the word hope might seem childish that the voices and gazes cheering for you are closest to you.”
Is there a need for more explanation in front of the number ‘20’? ‘20’ is cold. ‘20’ is hot. We were all ‘20’. Or we will be ‘20’. All the ‘20’ that sleeps within us meets new songs and breathes again. It comes alive. It writhes. The heart of ‘20’ beats again.
