A warm story of comfort to the listener

It has been 12 years since the release of the second regular album. During that time, Kang Heo Dalim has gained a new family. She also moved her life and started living as a stranger in an unfamiliar place. It is natural for the environment to be reflected in the music of a singer-songwriter. The songs inspired by the new family ('Love', 'You Are My Love') became the title of the album, and the process of getting accustomed to the scenery and sky in an unfamiliar space is captured in the lyrics as a warm word of comfort ('It's Okay Blues'), telling not to give up anything ('The Sea') and that one can take a break and fly again ('That's Fine!'). This album, filled with the warm comfort we wanted to hear the most during the past two years when COVID-19 covered all lives, may have been a story akin to a spell that Kang Heo Dalim used to gather herself.

Due to the unavoidable changes in personal circumstances, including COVID-19, her activities as a musician inevitably shrank. Not only were there not many broadcasts before, but both large and small performances were postponed or canceled. During this time, Kang Heo Dalim happened to see a painting in the studio of artist Yoon Jung Won, and the artwork of a human and a penguin hugging tightly made her reflect on the past time spent struggling to care for her family and instilled the courage to release an album that had long been overdue. [LOVE] is the result of two full years of preparation. The artwork of the album contains the work of artist Yoon Jung Won, sharing the emotions Kang Heo Dalim felt at that time with the listener. This time, along with the music created from that newfound courage.

Just as not all music on TV is everything, not only musicians who perform in clubs are true musicians. It may have been fortunate for Kang Heo Dalim to be free from the situation of having to pay attention to momentary reactions while ordinary songs are dressed up like dramas in the numerous audition programs that have sprung up. The name 'Dalim' seems to be at odds with the fact that Kang Heo Dalim is very slow. Perhaps because of our reality dominated by instant satisfaction and 'speed', her music resonates more dearly with the word 'comfort' mentioned earlier.

In addition, Kang Heo Dalim has decorated this album with even more analog sensibility. She insisted on studio live recordings to connect with the musicians involved and actively used analog instruments played by hand rather than artificial effects. However, it is strange. Although the instruments are not packed tightly, something comes across richly, and while the sharpness of the voice is not dulled at all, the timbre is warm. The blues that describe her, such as the swinging 'Adult Child', the sublime 'Heart, That Moon', and 'You Are My Love' featuring Hyun Jin Young, along with the overall atmosphere of the songs ranging from gospel to jazz, create a feeling of sharing the breath of the performer in a suitably sized cozy club or a small theatrical stage.

Anyway, we are currently in the era of singles and playlists. From the perspective of making music, being somewhat free from the regret of songs that may be buried except for one or two tracks in a regular album and the financial pressure needed for production can be a positive function provided by singles and the playlists they are included in. Kang Heo Dalim also released a few singles between her second album and this album. However, these singles were integrated back into this album as an element that composes the whole. Kang Heo Dalim's [LOVE], which has pressed 11 tracks into one album, returns to its essence, not as a regression against the flow of the times, but as an album that is like a single track, and the tracklist contained in an album can also be considered another playlist.

Perhaps because there were many things I wanted comfort for, I find myself continuously drawn to this album, and like Kang Heo Dalim, I am also trying to be happy now.
