[Love and Friendship Like a Passing Lantern]
There are times when the life that has passed by flashes by like a lantern. When there is time to look back, and when facing a decisive moment, the panorama of life unfolds... Those moments when my past unfolds like highlights often become turning points in life.
Kim Hojoong chose the title for his second classical album. It is a reminiscence of love and friendship that passes by like a lantern. A small moment of reflection during his military service, a decisive moment when he has to stand before his fans again, and for Kim Hojoong, who has lived a more dramatic life than anyone else, the imagery of 'panorama' holds deeper meaning than ever.
The concept of this album is a greeting from Kim Hojoong to lovers, friends, and fans who occupy a place in the lantern of life. The question and answer of 'Are you doing well? I am doing well too.' are spread wide like a 'panorama' across the two albums. Although it is based on classical music, the musical styles contained in the album are also diverse and have a wide spectrum. From authentic vocal music with a strong Italian feel to crossover ballads that trot fans can enjoy without burden, and even Latin music suitable for summer, this is a rich album rarely seen in recent times.
Just as everyone has memories of love and friendship, Kim Hojoong's panorama contains memories of empathy. It may be rough and grand, but the loneliness and sadness felt in the depths are no different from those of us all. This may be the reason why many are enthusiastic about Kim Hojoong's music. A life that is more dramatic and special than anyone else's, yet his voice, which carries life, is underpinned by universal emotions that embrace the lives of the public. This is why he can breathe with many in the popular music scene despite achieving success as a vocalist without any shortcomings.
As befits the title 'panorama', the entire album flows like watching a movie starring Kim Hojoong. The instrumental piece 'En Aranjuez con tu amor', which serves as the intro track, contributes to announcing the grand start of this cinematic album.
The title tracks are 'Jumadeung' and 'Promise'. 'Jumadeung' is a song that aligns with the overall concept of the album, and Kim Hojoong's delicate and soft tone is impressive. It contains the advantages of classical, trot, and pop, but it stands out as a song that transcends genres. The double title track 'Promise' features pianist Yiruma as a composer. This song, characterized by Yiruma's unique delicacy and lyricism, touches the heart with Kim Hojoong's simple emotions.
Choi Baek-ho's name also stands out. Choi Baek-ho, who collaborated on the duet song 'Let's Sing', readily accepted the duet proposal, and the song was completed with a sense of friendship that transcends generations rather than a collaboration between seniors and juniors. This song perfectly matches the intention of creating an album that is enjoyable and relatable for both the listener and the performer.
'Friend' is also a song worthy of much love. Unlike 'Jumadeung', it captures the charm of a crossover singer with its unique mid-low tone. In the crossover style 'Season of Longing', it embraces a comfortable retro style of easy listening. The climax, which explodes with the poignant singing style of trot, is attractive. 'Autumn Flower' is a song selected by Kim Hojoong himself, showcasing his qualities as a vocalist. It leads deeply with a heavier emotion than other songs, layered over a cello base.
The cover songs scattered throughout the album are both popular and unique. They are selections that are not cliché yet easy to listen to. In songs like 'Il Mare Calmo Della Sera', 'Champagne', 'Brucia La Terra', and 'Adoro', emotions explode, while the opera number 'Tiritomba' and the Latin number 'Oye Como Va' ignite excitement. The jazz-influenced 'Love in Portofino' allows one to indulge in a swaying atmosphere, while 'O Tannenbaum' is solemn and pure.
The outro song 'Butterfly', completed with piano and harmonica, conveyed Kim Hojoong's explanation of the song. “The small caterpillar dreams. After passing through the long winter of trials and pain, it flies up as a butterfly. And sings in the vast world. The lonely piano and harmonica performance in the first half represents the time of trials, and eventually, with beautiful humming, it flies up as a butterfly.”
The message contained in 'Butterfly' is impressive. The small caterpillar dreaming, and the butterfly beautifully soaring after going through the time of trials. An album completed in a decisive moment of life that flashes by like a lantern. How will his panorama unfold at the next turning point in his life? It starts again from now.
