The historical debut album of gypsy guitarist Park Ju Won, ‘Gypsy Time’, has been released on LP. In this album released in 2009, Park Ju Won showcased poignant melodies and amazing guitar techniques, quickly rising to stardom in the performance scene. He later sparked a gypsy guitar craze in the Korean pop music scene, winning numerous awards.
In 2009, it was selected as ‘Album of the Year’ by the portal site Naver, and the following year, it won the ‘Best Jazz & Crossover’ category at the Korean Popular Music Awards. Park Ju Won was chosen as ‘Rookie of the Year’ by Hankyoreh and ranked first overall and in the performance category in the ‘Rookie of the Year 2009-2010’ by the music magazine ‘Popular Music Sound’. He was selected as the best guitarist for two consecutive years in 2010 and 2011 in the ‘Jazz People’ readers' poll. One media outlet praised him as “a musician who came like a blessing.”
This LP is produced with high-quality specifications, including transparent color vinyl and a gatefold tip-on sleeve, with all cutting, pressing, and printing processes conducted in the Czech Republic.
This album, which is rich in both brilliance and deep melancholy, showcases Park Ju Won's musical talent across various genres, including tango, bolero, and smooth jazz, based on gypsy music.
The lineup of featured musicians is also impressive. The soulful vocalist Jung Yeob, jazz diva Malo, harmonica player Jeon Je Deok, and jazz tango band LAVENTANA all contributed to the album. In the title track ‘Night in Camp Nou’, Jung Yeob elevates the charm of urban Spanish guitar playing with his soulful voice. In ‘Made in France’, a reinterpretation of a piece by French guitarist Bireli Lagrene, Park Ju Won's guitar and Malo's scatting unite spectacularly, evoking admiration. In ‘Hide & Seek’, which features a tense musical composition, LAVENTANA's performance engages in a breathless duel with Park Ju Won's guitar.
Having composed most of the tracks himself, Park Ju Won particularly demonstrates the achievement of incorporating gypsy music into a Korean context in this album. The first track ‘Youth’, where the guitar moves in a straight line, blends gypsy jazz with Korean trot sensibilities, creating an illusion that gypsy music might actually belong to us. The album's namesake first track ‘Gypsy Time’ also reflects European gypsy jazz style, yet it is deeply imbued with Korean pathos.
