A song made by holding hands, a song that holds hands
- The fourth regular album [Hand] of “Summer of Thoughts”
Starting with the first album “Summer of Thoughts” (2009), followed by “Cape” (2012), “Back to the Forest” (2016), and “The Republic of Trees” (2019), songwriter Park Jong-hyun's project “Summer of Thoughts” presents its 4th regular album “Hand”.
The title “Hand” refers to both the hand of 'labor' and the hand of 'guest', and it is a word that shows the nature of this album. In this collaborative album, Park Jong-hyun intentionally entrusts one core aspect of his work, which he has done himself until now, to other musicians in all the tracks. This attempt, which began to find expressions that break away from the method of getting used to his own voice and character for over ten years, is completed by holding the hands willingly offered by eight fellow musicians.
Each track of the album features eight musicians: 9 (Song Jae-kyung), Kwon Wol, Kim Sa-wol, Kang Ah-sol, Kim Il-du, Park Hye-ri, Lee Seung-jun, and Hong Gap, participating in singing, composing, or arranging. These singer-songwriters, shining in their own colors, mix their colors like paint with Park Jong-hyun to create new songs. The words he wrote meet the breath of other musicians and collide, and his breath struggles with the melodies and atmospheres created by other musicians. The eight songs completed in the intended tension are tied together in a narrative within the album, while also revealing a variety of colors that change according to the collaborators.
Just as one would consider direction and stage settings according to a script, the music was designed later to match the lyrics and the voice that sings them, resulting in each song being composed of different genres and different instrumentations. For this, musicians such as Min Sang-yong and Yang Hyun-mo (drums), Lee Dong-jun (bass), Park Hye-ri (accordion), Hong Gap and Jang Hyun-ho (guitar), Lim Yi-hwan (cello), and Kwon Wol (piano) come and go to help complete the songs. The color differences between tracks are further highlighted by mixing (Min Sang-yong) that focuses on different directions and priorities for each song. Kim Gi-jo (cover design), Byeon In-hee (logo design), and Lee Sop (video direction and illustrations) create visual images that harmonize with the music.
The “Summer of Thoughts” that was close to a monodrama now features several characters from a play. However, the listener can simply follow the stories and voices of each song and sense the whole of “Hand” that they weave together. It is enough to hold the song that is handed over like a hand, moment by moment, in a strange way.
